Health Benefits of Sunlight

Sun exposure is something that we always experience. We often hear stories about eyes problems and skin cancer that are caused by excessive sunlight exposure. In this case, we are often advised to wear sunglasses and use sunscreen. However, sunlight could also provide us with some kind of healing power. In essence, sun is the greatest source of energy in our solar system and life won’t exist without sun. With that ball of heated plasma, planets will become cold, barren rocks. There are many benefits that we can get from the sun. Here are some of them:

It allows us to process vitamin D: Vitamin D is a substance that can influence our whole body. It affects all parts of our body, from our brain cells to our bones. The lack of vitamin D will make us more vulnerable to various diseases, such as osteoporosis, multiple sclerosis, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis and heart diseases. It’s amazing what we can get from a brief exposure to sunlight.

It helps the prevention of cancer: By allowing the proper level of vitamin D, we should be able to prevent the incidence of cancer that may affect our colon, prostate, ovary, breast, lungs and pancreas.

It improves eye sight: It is commonly believed that constant exposure to sunlight will impair our eyesight. In reality, it’s true if we allow our eyes to get directly exposed to sunlight for a long period of time. Reflected sunlight that goes into our eyes could provide visual benefits compared to artificial indoor lights, especially those emitted by computers, mobile devices and TVs. Many people who go outside more often and look at faraway objects from the shade say that their vision is improved. If we don’t have the time to go outdoor, we can open the windows and spend a few minutes each hour to look at faraway objects.

It boosts our moods: People who stay indoors too long will eventually get the blues. Even if we don’t plan to meet anyone, we could walk outside and experience the outside environment. This is especially true after long winter months. In this situation, people would only need a light therapy. Sunlight works great for boosting our minds, especially during the spring.

In reality, human was meant to thrive under the sun and our ancestors spent much of their time outdoor and they are almost always exposed to sunlight. Although, we should use common sense when it comes to seek sunlight exposure, we could also harm our health by avoiding sunlight like vampires. In this case, we should avoid exposing ourselves too long under sunlight, especially the sunlight is particularly intense, between 10AM and 2PM. It is also important for us to avoid looking at the sun. Sunlight is the natural source of light and it contains many different types of visible and invisible lights, ranging from infra red to ultra violet. Our body will react well if we allow it to get the proper dosage of sunlight, especially when it first emerges in the morning.
