If you are skilled in computing and have experience in design and development, this job may be appropriate for you.

Degrees and foundation degrees in the related field are typically needed for this job, but the experience gained from a graduate trainee scheme may also suffice.

Software development requires creative problem-solving. You will need to have knowledge of working with technical plans as well as good customer service and communication skills.

The Work

Software developers (or programmers) create, design and build computer applications that help companies operate efficiently.

A developer’s role could involve:

  • Building databases for financial or administrative purposes
  • Designing a computer control system for machinery and manufacturing
  • Developing the software used in home entertainment systems such as games consoles and Blu-ray players (embedded controls)

You may be involved in projects that require you to create programmes from scratch, or repair/amend existing programmes.

Other projects may require you to create test software, fix bugs and then install a final fully functional programme onto a client’s server or network. A lot of these may also need to be maintained and supported by you post-installation.

The Hours

Hours vary from 37 and 40 hours per week (7 to 8 hours per working day). Overtime and weekend work may also be a necessity as you work on more complex projects and toward demanding deadlines.

Developers usually work in an office, but travelling to meet clients face to face is a possibility. Longer project may require you to work away from home.

Wages

Starting wages for graduates can be between £20,000 and £26,000 per annum (approx. $30,685 and $39,893 per annum).

More experienced programmes can expect to earn between £28,000 and £40,000 per annum (approx. $42,963 and $61,376 per annum). Those developers who have a management role can expect to earn £50,000+ per annum (approx. $76,723 per annum).

Entry Requirements

Degrees and foundation degrees in the related field are typically needed for this job. A variety of related subjects are available, including:

  • Information Technology
  • Computer Science
  • Software Engineering
  • Business and Information Systems
  • Software Development

Without an IT-related degree, experience gained from a graduate trainee scheme may also suffice. You could also study for a postgraduate degree in a related subject (this would have to be done through UCAS).

Hands-on experience, gained from internships, placements and a year in industry, can prove to be particularly useful.

Knowledge in programming language such as SQL, Java, C++, Oracle, and Linux and . NET frameworks, Delphi, UML, XML and Visual Basic are essential.
