USA – England 1-0, 1950

Some of the US team members had just arrived in the country, and the majority of the players at the spectacular 1950 World Cup in Brazil were actually part-timers. For instance, goalkeeper Frank Borghi, who denied a penalty, drove a hearse at a funeral parlor. It was the 37th minute of the game, played in Belo Horizonte, when England goalkeeper Bert Williams somehow managed to save a shot, but Joe Gaetjens miraculously pushed the rebound into the back of the net. The US bravely held on for a 1-0 win, and the rest is history, which even hit the big screen, in the movie The Game of Their Lives.

Uruguay – Brazil 2-1, 1950

In a decisive match of the same World Cup, which was played in a truly round-robin format, a massively talented Brazil was a crowd favorite to clench the coveted trophy for the first time, and to do so, they  only needed a draw. But to everyone’s surprise, in front nearly 200,000 spectators in the Maracana, unfancied Uruguay managed to defeat their South American rival 2-1. The match was later dubbed the Maracanazo, which can roughly be translated as translates as The Maracana Blow.

North Korea – Italy 1-0, 1966

At the peak of the Cold War, the North Korean side had already come up with one shocker by qualifying for the 1966 World Cup, held in England, and now they has to face Italy, undoubtedly one of the strongest teams in the football’s history. In the final game of their group, Pak Doo-Ik became a true legend scoring the goal which knocked the Italians out of the tournament, putting his team into the quarter-finals. Later on, The Koreans took a 3-0 lead over the mighty Portugal in the quarter-finals, but Eusebio then scored 4 goals to secure Portugal’s 5-3 win.

Senegal – France 1-0, 2002

France was the World Cup holder when it arrived in South Korea, but was immediately stunned 1-0 by the Senegal side in the opener, played in Seoul. Zinedine Zidane was out due to injury, and the French badly missed him.
