No one had such common use as the clinical thermometer among the several devices or instruments considered necessary for the clinical test. The only way of measuring the heat or cold of the human corpor was by hand in the time of Hippocrates, while fever or chills were considered to display signs of morbidity. Pulse was observed as a disease index in Alexandrine medicine that replaced the crude temperature assessment. The qualities of hot, cold, dry and moist were attributed to the four touches of humor in the Middle Ages, and fever became significant again in this way.

Working of Medical Thermometer:

Medical infrared thermometer is an infrared radiation measurement device that is emitted from an object-a type of electromagnetic radiation that is under the visible spectrum of light. The most basic design of infrared thermometers is a lens that focuses on infrared thermal radiation on a sensor and converts radiation intensity into an electrical signal. This system makes it easier to calculate the temperature from a distance without having to make contact. In situations where thermocouples and other form sensors can not be used, the system is useful for measuring temperature.

Types of Medical Infrared Thermometer:

Today, there are various types of infrared temperature sensing systems, including settings designed for compact and portable handheld applications, as well as for fixed mounting for particular purposes.

1- Spot infrared thermometers: Such instruments calculate the temperature on a surface spot.

2- Infrared Scanning System: We search a broader spectrum as the spot thermometer points to a spinning mirror. They are commonly used in the manufacture of conveyors or network processes such as continuous stacks of material on a transport belt or huge sheets of metal or glass coming out of an oven.

3- Infrared thermal imaging cameras: These cameras are basically infrared radiation thermometers used to measure temperature over a fairly wide area at several locations to produce a two-dimensional, thermographic picture. In contrast to other types of infrared thermometers, this device is more software and hardware intensive.

A digital “smart” thermometer and a paired phone app is enabling a company to take consumers’ temperature data from across the country and provide real-time insights into emerging COVID-19 hot spots. Overall, remote infrared thermometers have proven less accurate, “said James Lawler, University of Nebraska associate professor of medicine. He claimed that electronic ear thermometers and oral thermometers can be more accurate, but temperature measurements would take longer and pose a higher risk of contamination cross-section. ‘There are problems such as sweating and heat loss,’ he said.

Raina MacIntyre, lecturer of global biosecurity at The University of New South Wales, said, “Touch is not an excellent idea even with disposable shielding for infection prevention”
