Some Of India’s Most Unspoiled and Peaceful Hill Destinations

India boasts of some of the world’s most iconic mountain ranges. From the Western Ghats to the mighty Himalayas; the country is a delight for mountain lovers all around the world. However, the ever-growing popularity of some hill stations in the country has made them not the most ideal for travellers who above all else, seek cleanliness, peace, and solitude.

While hill-stations like Shimla and Ooty are full of tourists throughout the year, the following destinations guarantee an escape from the crowds, and of course, peace and tranquillity.

Coonoor, Tamil Nadu

The Nilgiri Mountains in South India are home to both Ooty and Coonoor. However, that’s where the similarity ends between the two hill-stations. While Ooty has become one of the most commercial hill-stations in South India, Coonoor, apart from its bustling town centre, remains relatively untouched. Apart from the multitude of glorious viewpoints in the nearby Nilgiris, Coonoor is also known for its tea and plantations, which add a lot of colour to a landscape that is already rich in natural beauty.

Yercaud, Tamil Nadu

Yercaud is nestled in the scenic Western Ghats, but what makes it much less popular than thriving tourist places like Kodaikanal is its relative inaccessibility. As the hill-station still has not reached its peak in terms of popularity, it remains way cheaper than many other prominent hill destinations in South India, and is perfect for travellers seeking peace on a budget. Dotted by numerous parks, gardens, rock formations, and forests, Yercaud is a destination that is sure to rejuvenate every inch of your body, mind, and soul.

Haflong, Assam

Assam’s only hill-station is home to numerous indigenous tribes, who are incredibly hospitable. The rolling hills in the distance, coupled with the astounding variety of flora, make Haflong one of the most scenic destinations in North-East India. It is a hub for numerous adventure activities as well, with paragliding and trekking being very popular. The hill-station’s most iconic destination is the Haflong Lake. There are numerous day trips you can take as well, thanks to the proximity of prominent places like Maibong and Jatinga Village.

Komic, Himachal Pradesh

In the higher reaches of the remote Spiti Valley lies Komic, which is claimed to be the world’s highest village with an accessible road for vehicles. While there has been much debate about this particular claim, there is no debate about Komic’s astounding beauty. Situated above 15,000 ft., Komic only has a few houses, with a few among them offering home-stay facilities. Komic is ideal for the simple-minded mountain lover, and it is incredibly peaceful. Be sure to head out at night and witness the night sky; it’s an absolute treat to behold.
