London is one of the most exciting cities in the world and there are so many activities for freshers to enjoy. Once you’ve sussed out your student accommodation, it’s time to go exploring, as London has something for everyone!
1. Visit museums and galleries
The many museums and galleries of London offer a unique chance to get cultural. Visit Tate Britain and Tate Modern, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the National Portrait Gallery, the National History Museum, the Science Museum, and so many more.
2. Picnic in the parks
There are many beautiful parks where you can while away a lazy afternoon, including Hyde Park, Regent’s Park, Primrose Hill, Battersea, and St James’ Park. You can go boating and play sports, while many people go for runs, walks and picnics in the natural surroundings.Londons parks are hugely social areas, especially for students who can congregate there with their friends and while away the day.
3. See a show
Visiting the top theatres is a must when in London. From well-known shows with famous actors, such as Mamma Mia, to smaller shows with unknown actors – you might discover a new rising star! Head to Shaftesbury Avenue and Leicester Square.
4. Explore the landmarks
Freshers new to London will love exploring the landmarks. From the London Eye to the Houses of Parliament and Buckingham Palace, this is a city full of big landmarks that are perfect for a photo opportunity.
5. Take a boat trip
A boat trip on the Thames offers a unique way to see the Capital, and is something everyone should experience. Trips start on the Embankment and go out to Greenwich and beyond.
6. Do a city tour
London is enormous, so once you’ve moved into your student accommodation and have settled into your immediate area, a great way to get to know the rest of the city is to go on a guided tour. A tour bus will take you around the main central parts while you can often hop on and off too, so you can explore at your own pace, which will help you get your bearings. However, the best way to get to know London is just to start walking – that way you will discover your own hidden gems!
7. Go to the pub
Pubs are the heart and soul of English social life, so explore the main pub zones such as Soho, The City, Whitehall and Fleet Street for some great drinking places, from traditional pubs to modern city bars.
8. Hit the clubs
Nightlife in London is buzzing and there is something for everyone from smart cocktail lounges to gritty nightclubs, playing all kinds of music from hiphop to jazz, rock n roll to blues. Try Soho, Leicester Square, Camden and Shoreditch.
9. Go shopping
Everyone will find their niche in London, from the designer stores of Bond Street and Mayfair to the cool outlets of Camden and the markets of Portobello Road. For jewellery, try Hatton Garden and for crafts Greenwich Market, while for high street fashion, it has to be Oxford and Regent Street.
10. Travel on the Tube
London’s transport network is huge and includes buses, taxis, trains and the Tube. The tube is a huge network, spread across London and into the surrounding areas, meaning the nearest tube station is often a stone’s throw away from your student accommodation, allowing you to get out and about living the high life as a fresher in London!
