The Advantages Of Industrial Safety Boots

Safety Never Goes Out of Date

Whilst the growing use of technology has brought new systems and procedures to sectors such as construction and engineering, the need for a safe working environment and the importance of the safety of individual workers will never change. Safety equipment such as hard hats and high-visibility jackets help to prevent accidents, which can often have a devastating effect on families and employers alike.

Industrial safety boots, commonly known as steel-toe or steel-capped boots, were first introduced early in the 20th century. For the first time, industrial safety issues started being taken into consideration as part of the construction and industrial process, and at the same time compensation legislation first appeared. Employers quickly realised that they needed to do more to protect their workers from injury and themselves from legal action.

Since then safety boots have protected workers from a variety of incidents and accidents and now come in a variety of styles and specifications. In the UK the boots have to comply with a number of requirements in line with European safety standards (EN Standards) and must be effectively tested to prove compliance.

Benefits and Uses

To be compliant, the boots are typically made of high-quality waterproof materials such as Nubuck leather, with steel or composite toecaps and midsoles. The toecap gives protection against falling objects and prevents burns from chemical spills and splashes, whilst the midsole helps prevent punctures from sharp items underfoot. Toecaps must be able to withstand an impact equivalent to 200 joules of energy and withstand a resting mess of above 1000kg.

Thick rubber soles protect workers from electrical hazards due to their insulating qualities, which also, by having high levels of cushioning and support for the arch and heel of the foot, having the benefit of reducing fatigue and muscle pain and absorbing impacts. The boots are water-resistant and heat-resistant and insulate against both heat and cold. Some manufacturers produce styles of boot with a padded high ankle shank to help with comfort and protection and with anti-scuff toecaps to prolong the life of the boot. Additionally, and importantly, safety boots are slip-resistant.

For employers, providing safety boots and ensuring they are worn is essential to comply with Health and Safety Regulations. Well-equipped workers are safer and more productive, and the wide range of styles now available makes compliance with regulations across numerous sectors easier than ever.

In conclusion, the use of industrial safety boots makes sense for both worker and employee, helping avoid accidents and litigation and limiting the affect of accidents. Above all, they make workers safe, productive and better equipped to do their job, helping them to put their best foot forward.
